Today, the situation in the country is critical

More than 65 years have passed since Cuba became a serious challenge for the United States. The country’s history has only reinforced those concerns: just 90 miles off the U.S. coast, a regime emerged that was openly hostile to the United States and allied with the USSR, writes The Wall Street Journal.

Fidel CASTRO, a charismatic revolutionary with brilliant rhetoric, initially convinced the world that he was a democratic leader. Later, it became clear that he was a socialist dictator who skillfully held onto power for decades. His legacy was continued by party functionaries, but their abilities fall short of Castro’s own energy.

Today, the situation in the country is critical. The loss of Venezuelan oil following the policies of the TRUMP administration has exacerbated the crisis: widespread power outages, food shortages, cuts in social services, and limited garbage collection. Street protests are taking place in cities, while the authorities demonstrate an inability to suppress them effectively.

As local residents note, the revolutionary myth is aging. The government continues to rely on military and police force, but the old ideals of communism are losing their persuasiveness. People are seeing the truth with their own eyes and are increasingly less likely to believe official propaganda.

Experts say this may be a “late stage of communism” — a moment when the system exhausts its resources and ideas. Cuba may simply slide into even deeper poverty, but there is also a chance that the country is entering a phase of major change.

The United States is closely monitoring developments, but the White House response remains inconsistent. Observers note that the crisis in Cuba requires a constructive and well-thought-out approach rather than sporadic public statements. The story of Cuba may be approaching the end of one of the longest dramas of the 20th century, and the outcome of this process remains unpredictable.
