President of Kyrgyzstan Thanks Trump at the UN for Ending NGO Funding

Japarov had previously spoken critically of NGOs

Kyrgyz President Sadyr JAPAROV, speaking in New York at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, thanked U.S. President Donald TRUMP for his decision to stop funding non-governmental organizations (NGOs) around the world, according to the presidential press service.

“As a result, NGO interference in the internal affairs and politics of developing countries has virtually ceased. Trump’s decisions have created conditions for strengthening state sovereignty and allowing countries to independently choose their own path of development,” Japarov said.

Previously, foreign assistance was provided through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Trump announced the decision to suspend the agency’s operations on January 20, 2025, the day he took office. He stated that the U.S. foreign aid industry and the bureaucracy associated with it did not serve the country’s interests and, in many cases, contradicted American values.

“USAID destabilizes the world by promoting ideas in foreign countries that are directly at odds with harmonious and stable relations both within and between nations,” the executive order stated.

The U.S. authorities later dissolved USAID, resulting in the termination of more than 5,300 grants and contracts issued by the agency, with a total value exceeding $27 billion.

Japarov has previously made negative remarks about NGOs. In his view, some of them often spread “false and unreliable information.” In April 2024, the president signed the so-called “foreign agents” law, which tightened oversight of non-governmental organizations and their sources of funding. As a result, several NGOs ceased operations, including the Soros-Kyrgyzstan Foundation.
