80-year-old Nicaraguan president announces no more elections in the country

To ensure the opposition never comes to power

Nicaraguan President Daniel ORTEGA declared that there will be no more elections in the country. The 80-year-old politician made this statement during his first public appearance in two months, Reuters reports.

«There will be no more elections here in which they could try to seize the government, seize power. The days when parties supported by the Yankees and the Somocistas could regain power are gone and will never return,» Ortega said (he referred to Somocistas as supporters of Anastasio SOMOZA, who was overthrown in 1979).

He also announced that the government, together with the National Assembly under his control, will adopt a package of laws – a «wall» against what Ortega called the return of «coup plotters and traitors» to power, writes Havana Times.

Ortega has ruled Nicaragua since 2007, having previously served as president from 1979 to 1990. His current term ends next year. The last elections in Nicaragua took place in 2021 – observers and human rights groups described them as fraudulent: before the vote, Ortega arrested major opponents and business leaders, while opposition activity in the country was banned.

The Trump administration has labeled Ortega’s government a dictatorship and imposed sanctions on more than 2,350 Nicaraguan officials and their relatives.
