Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan to Resume Passenger Transport Across the Caspian

Passenger services on this route operated until 2020

Passenger sea transport between the ports of Kuryk and Baku is planned to be resumed, reports 24kz.

The initiative came from Kazakhstan, said the country’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Alim BAYEL. According to the diplomat, the Azerbaijani side supported Kazakhstan’s proposal. The transport authorities of both countries have already begun work on the prompt restoration of passenger services across the Caspian Sea.

“Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan will resume passenger transport on the Caspian. I am glad that the Azerbaijani side supported Kazakhstan’s proposal. At present, the transport authorities of the two countries have started work on the speedy resumption of passenger services,” the ambassador said.

Passenger transport on this route operated until 2020, after which it was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the suspension, about 1,500 passengers per year used the ferry service between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. The ambassador expressed hope that after the resumption of the route, the number of travelers across the Caspian will increase.

Alim Bayel also noted that currently 37 flights per week are operated between Baku and Astana, Almaty, Shymkent, Aktau, and Atyrau.
