Work on laying a fiber-optic cable from Azerbaijan to Kazakhstan along the bottom of the Caspian Sea has been completed, the Kazakh government’s press service reported.
It is stated that the 390 km cable will connect the digital infrastructure of the two countries and create a high-speed internet corridor between Asia and Europe.
According to a report by the Internet Society, until now almost all of Kazakhstan’s internet traffic — up to 95% — passed through Russian backbones, making the country vulnerable to potential restrictions from Moscow. In addition, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan connect to the internet through Kazakhstan.
