By 2035, the population of Astana may reach 2.4 million people

The population of Astana by 2035 may reach 2.3–2.4 million people. This was announced by the city’s akim, Zhenis KASSYMBEK, reports Kazinform.

In this regard, a new master plan is being developed for the capital, which provides for the development of the necessary engineering and social infrastructure. According to him, the updated master plan is expected to be adopted within the next 2–3 months. The document provides for the development of social facilities and infrastructure necessary for everyday life, taking into account population growth.

“We are now updating the city’s master plan. We plan to adopt it within 2–3 months. According to the document, by 2035 the population of Astana will reach 2.3–2.4 million people. Therefore, we are already preparing the necessary infrastructure for this period. All social facilities and infrastructure for daily life are included in the plan,” said the akim.

Zhenis Kassymbek noted that currently the number of permanent residents of the capital has reached 1.7 million people. In addition, more than 200,000 people come to Astana daily from nearby settlements.

“Currently, 1.7 million people permanently reside in the city. There is also daily migration. More than 200,000 people arrive daily from Kosshy, Talapker, Koyandy, Arshaly, Nurinsky district, and other settlements. Only from Kosshy, 60–70 thousand people come to Astana every day. In addition, about 100 thousand people live and work in the capital without registration. Thus, about 2 million people are in Astana every day,” he noted.

The akim also touched upon the issue of providing the capital with drinking water. According to him, there is currently no water shortage in the city, and the available reserves will last for several years.

“Previously, the problem of drinking water shortage really existed. Now there is no such problem. We have a surplus formed for several years ahead. We completed the construction of the third pumping and filtration station, which ensures reserves for the next 3–4 years. In addition, we have started a new project – laying a water pipeline from the Satpayev Canal Irtysh–Karaganda. The project is planned to be completed in 2028–2029. As a result, the city will have a fourth station, which will meet the capital’s needs for another 10 years. The water supply problem will be completely resolved,” said Zhenis Kassymbek.

As of April 1, 2026, the population of Kazakhstan reached 20,547,909 people.
