China ranks second among Kazakhstan’s import partners

Russia accounted for 31% of all goods imported into Kazakhstan, according to data from Kazakhstan’s Bureau of National Statistics analyzed by TASS.

China ranked second among Kazakhstan’s import partners with a 29.8% share of total imports, followed by Germany in third place with 4.6%.

Among the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Russia also retained its position as Kazakhstan’s leading trading partner in terms of trade turnover during the first eight months of 2026, accounting for 87.3% of the total. Kazakhstan’s trade turnover with Kyrgyzstan stood at 8.3%, with Belarus at 4%, and with Armenia at 0.4%.

According to the bureau, Kazakhstan’s total imports from January to August 2026 amounted to nearly $45.6 billion. Compared with the same period in 2025, imports increased by 4.5%.

The growth in imports from Russia came amid the strengthening of Kazakhstan’s national currency, the tenge, against major world currencies, including the Russian ruble. At the beginning of the year, the exchange rate was approximately 6.5 tenge per ruble, while during the summer it strengthened to about 5 tenge per ruble. Kazakhstan’s National Bank had previously noted that the appreciation of the national currency would help reduce the cost of imports, including those from Russia.
