The project is aimed at collecting household batteries from the population

A test project for the free collection of used batteries has started in Almaty. The initiative is implemented within the Eco Network project, whose main goal is to reduce the amount of hazardous waste ending up in solid waste landfills and to draw citizens’ attention to issues of environmental responsibility, reports Almaty.tv.

A special container for collecting batteries has been installed at the “Meloman” store, located at 58 Gogol Street. Anyone can hand in used batteries completely free of charge. The project focuses on collecting household batteries from residents. During the pilot stage, no more than 10 used batteries per person are accepted in the container.

The project has only just begun, but city residents are already actively bringing in used batteries, showing strong interest in environmental initiatives.

Environmental experts remind that batteries contain heavy metals and toxic substances, including mercury, cadmium, lead, and nickel. When disposed of in regular landfills, their casing eventually breaks down, and hazardous compounds seep into the soil and groundwater. This can lead to environmental pollution and negatively affect the health of people, animals, and plants.

According to environmentalist and Eco Network founder Yevgeny MUKHAMEDZHANOV, the development of accessible infrastructure for separate waste collection is an important step toward building ecological culture and responsible consumption. The limit on the number of batteries was introduced to ensure the container is used primarily for household waste collection from residents, rather than for large batches of batteries from organizations and enterprises.
