Population of Kazakhstan increased by 63,000 people in four months

The smallest population was recorded in Ulytau Region — 218,251 people

According to the Bureau of National Statistics, as of May 1, 2026, the population of Kazakhstan amounted to 20,562,993 people. Since the beginning of the year, the growth was 63,171 people, which corresponds to an increase rate of 0.31%, Kazinform reports.

The main contribution to population growth was provided by natural increase — the difference between births and deaths. During the reporting period, it amounted to 57,178 people. Migration balance was also positive, reaching 5,993 people.

The average population of the country in the first months of the year was 20.53 million people.

Urban and rural population In urban areas, 13,153,726 people live. Since the beginning of the year, this figure increased by 68,616 people, with a growth rate of 0.52%.

At the same time, a decline in population was recorded in rural areas. The number amounted to 7,409,267 people, which is 5,445 fewer than at the beginning of the year. The decline rate was 0.07%.

Largest regions by population

Among the country’s regions, the leaders are:

  • Almaty — 2,362,463 people
  • Turkestan Region — 2,146,817 people
  • Astana — 1,668,750 people
  • Almaty Region — 1,609,784 people
  • Shymkent — 1,305,620 people

The smallest population was recorded in Ulytau Region — 218,251 people.

Natural increase and migration

By natural increase, the leaders are:

  • Turkestan Region — 10,792 people
  • Shymkent — 6,785 people
  • Astana — 6,652 people
